How to choose upholstery that survives your actual household — double rubs, weaves, leathers, and wood finishes explained.
The single most useful number on an upholstery tag is the double rub count — how many passes a machine makes across the fabric before it shows wear. Every performance weave we sell is rated 50,000+ double rubs, which is roughly the threshold where "residential heavy duty" starts.
Here is how to pick, in the order that actually matters.
1. Start with the household, not the color

2. Then the weave
Performance weave — a tight synthetic or synthetic blend with a factory-applied stain finish. Spills bead rather than soak; no water rings. This is what we put in most family rooms.
Bouclé — the looped texture everyone wants right now. Beautiful, soft, and genuinely bad with cats: claws catch the loops and pull them.
Chenille — velvety and durable, but shows directional shading. If even nap matters to you, look at something else.
Linen and linen blends — the most beautiful drape available and the least forgiving. Wonderful in a formal room nobody eats in.
3. Leather is a different decision
Top-grain leather develops a patina and gets better for a decade. It is also cold in a Minnesota January and shows scratches from pets permanently. Our Copperfield leathers are all top grain — we do not sell bonded leather, which delaminates.
4. Wood finishes
- Natural Oak — the most forgiving with dust and daylight
- Weathered Grey — hides fingerprints, shows dust
- Walnut — darkest grain, shows dust and water rings most
- Antique White — shows chips at the edges over time; best on pieces that do not take daily impact
Take the swatches home
Every fabric and finish in our library goes home with you at no charge. Put them on the actual sofa's wall, look at them at 8am and at 8pm under your own lamps, and live with them for a week. Showroom lighting lies to everybody.
